William Russell Boles Sr. (30 April 1927 - August 16, 2008), known as Billy Boles , is a Monroe lawyer and banker who, in twenty-four years, serves a term in the Louisiana State Senate. He represents his homeland of Richland as well as neighboring Franklin and Catahoula parishes in northeast Louisiana from 1952 to 1956, during the reign of Governor Robert F. Kennon, his Democratic counterpart. Boles succeeded and preceded the pro-Long senator, Ralph E. King Sr., a doctor from Winnsboro, the Franklin Parish chair.

Careers

Boles was born on Louisiana's State Day to Vernon and Ruth Boles in Rayville, the center of Richland Parish, located east of Monroe. He attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe (then Northeast Junior College) on a basketball scholarship and then served eighteen months in the United States Navy. Afterwards, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, the Lincoln Parish chair. He is the chairman of his law student organization at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Boles and close friends, State Senator Jamar Adcock of Monroe (service: 1960-1972), co-founded what is now the Bank of North Louisiana Region, originally the American Bank in Monroe. Adcock and Boles also started Fidelity Bank in Slidell, Colonial Bank in New Orleans, and Progressive Bank in Metairie at Jefferson Parish. They bought into former Bossier Bank and Trust Company in Bossier City and Jena Bank in Jena at La Salle Parish. Boles met Adcock when they were LSU students. Their First Fidelity Mortgage Company then became part of Chase.

Known for his close ties to important Louisiana politicians, including Governor John J. McKeithen and Edwin Washington Edwards, Boles in 2004 was inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and the Hall of Fame at Winnfield. At the time of his death, Boles semi-retired in Monroe in legal practice with his son, William Boles Jr. (born 1956).

Boles married until his death for sixty years to former Mary Catherine Furlow (ca. 1928-2010), who came from Elizabeth at Allen Parish, Louisiana, and the daughter of Adelaide and John Furlow. He is Roman Catholic. The couple is remembered for his philanthropy through Catherine and William R. "Billy" Boles Terrace on the seventh floor of the library at the University of Louisiana in Monroe.

In addition to his wife, Boles left three daughters and a son: Linda Boles Campbell (born 1949) and husband George M. Campbell Sr (born 1948) from Monroe, Diane Boles Kirtland (born 1951) and her husband Walter Kirtland (born 1946) from Baton Rouge, attorney Janet Boles Crawford (born 1954) and her husband, Baton Rouge lobbyist lawyer Scott Holland Crawford (born 1953), came from Minden at Webster's Parish, and William R. Boles Jr. lawyer. Boles has eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The service will be held on August 19 at the First Baptist Church of West Monroe, with a tomb at the Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
