The Music City Bowl , officially the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl for sponsorship purposes, is an NCAA certified post-season American college football game that has been played in Nashville, Tennessee, since 1998.
The game initially featured a battle between representatives of the Southeastern Conference and the Great Eastern Conference. The Big East was replaced by the Big Ten Conference in 2002. Starting with the 2006 game, Big Ten Conference was replaced by the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC also took part in the 2005 game, when Virginia emerged because the SEC did not have enough teams to fill the bowl. Starting in 2014, Music City Bowl shares its relationship with the TaxSlayer Bowl; Music City Bowl received second choice from ACC or Big Ten team.

History
The first Music City Bowl was played at Vanderbilt Stadium in 1998. Beginning in 1999, the game was moved to the recently completed Tennessee Tenants stadium, now known as the Nissan Stadium. Starting in 2002, this game is known as the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl . In 2003, Bridgestone became the main sponsor of the game, and its full title became Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl presented by Bridgestone . Both sponsors are based in Nashville. Previous sponsors of bowl games include American General Life & amp; Accident (now AIG's subsidiary) in the inaugural 1998 game, and "homepoint.com" which is no longer working in the 1999 game. There were no sponsors in 2000 and 2001. Bridgestone lost its sponsor after the 2007 game. 2010, Franklin American Mortgage served as title sponsor, although Gaylord still serves as the main sponsor of the event.
The Music City Bowl has a history of distractions. The biggest victory that was not achieved was when Kentucky (10) defeated Clemson 28-20 in 2006. Other disorders including Minnesota (7) defeated Arkansas 29-14 in 2002 and Virginia (6) defeated Minnesota 34-31 in 2005. Boston The college is a 4-point underdog when they beat Georgia 20-16 in 2001, West Virginia was a 3-point underdog when they beat Mississippi in 2000, Syracuse was a 3-point underdog when they beat Kentucky in 1999 and Minnesota was 1 - where underdogs when they defeated Alabama in 2004. Boston College also became an upset victim at Music City Bowl in 2008, when Vanderbilt Commodores (4), made their first bowl appearance since 1982, defeating the 24th rank of Eagles 16-14. The only team favored to win the Music City Bowl was Virginia Tech (-5) in Alabama at the first Music City Bowl in 1998, Auburn (-3) over Wisconsin in 2003, Kentucky (-7) over Florida State in 2007, the State of Mississippi (-6.5) above Wake Forest in 2011, Vanderbilt (-7.5) above NC State at Music City Bowl 2012, and Tennessee (-3) over Nebraska at Music City Bowl 2016.

The heaviest loss was Virginia Tech's 38-7 victory over Alabama in 1998. Alabama's 7 points in the game were low for the Music City Bowl. The closest match was Vanderbilt's 16-14 victory over Boston College in 2008. It also marked the lowest point total in the bowl's history. The highest total points were 49 from West Virginia against Ole Miss in 2000; Ole Miss scored 38 in the game and 87 points total in the game was high for the Music City Bowl.
