Sheffield Phelps (1921-2006) is an American businessman, and a prominent figure in the arts community. He is a descendant of an old New England family who moved to Washington state and rose to become president of Seafirst Mortgage, the Seattle Opera Board and Pacific Northwest Ballet. He left a remarkable record in business and civil life, primarily as a financial and organizational pillar for the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Dropped from a family that landed in Massachusetts in 1634, he grew up in New England, preparing to go to college at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts and lectures at Yale University. He served as Major US Marine Corps during World War II, flew 92 missions with reconnaissance aircraft and gained Distinguished Flying Cross.

He is Seattle Council's board president when helping launch the Pacific Northwest Ballet. He joined the new venture as chairman of the board, and in 1977 helped recruit the founding artistic director of the company, Kent Stowell and Francia Russell. The company's headquarters, Phelps Center, bears his name. "Without him, there would be no Pacific Northwest Ballet," Stowell said.

Phelps's financial abilities helped ballet become a national model, and he never asked for artistic sacrifices to make a book balance, Stowell said.
