M is a fictional character in Ian Fleming's James Bond book and film; Head of Secret Intelligence Service - also known as MI6 - and Bond superiors. Fleming by character on a number of people he knew who led the British intelligence department. M has appeared in novels by Fleming and seven follow-up authors, as well as in twenty-four films. In the film series Eon Productions, M has been described by four actors: Bernard Lee, Robert Brown, Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes, petahana; in two independent productions, M played by John Huston, David Niven and Edward Fox.

Fleming based on many of the M characters on Rear Admiral John Godfrey, who was Fleming's superior in the Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War. After Fleming's death, Godfrey complained, "He turned me into a bad character, M."
Other possible inspirations include Lieutenant Colonel Sir Claude Dansey, deputy head of MI6 and head of the wartime Z network, which reaches different interpretations of his character from those who know him: Malcolm Muggeridge considers him "the only professional in MI6", while Hugh Trevor-Roper assumes Dansey as "nonsense, corrupt, incompetent, but with certain ingenuity". Further inspiration for M is Maxwell Knight, head of MI5, who signed his memo as "M" and who Fleming knew well. The MI6 chief tradition of signing their name with one letter comes from Mansfield Smith-Cumming, who will sign the initial "C" in green ink.
Another possibility for the M model is William Melville, an Irishman who heads the Bureau of Secret Service, a precursor to MI5 and MI6: Melville was referred to in government circles when M. Melville recruited Sidney Reilly into government service and foiled the plot against Queen Victoria in 1887 His Golden Jubilee. Fleming's biographer, John Pearson, also hypothesizes that Fleming's characterization of M reflects his mother's memories:

Novel
Fleming's third Bond novel, Moonraker, specifies the initial M as "M **** M *******" and his first name is later revealed to be Miles. In the last novel of the series, The Man with the Golden Gun , the full identity of M is revealed as Vice Admiral Sir Miles Messervy KCMG, CB, DSO, OBE; Messervy has been appointed to the head of MI6 after his predecessor has been murdered on his desk.
A naval theme goes along Fleming's description of M and his surroundings, and his character is portrayed by Oblon Ben Macintyre journalist and scholar as "every inch of the naval martinet". Macintyre also notes that in his research on Fleming's work, Kingsley Amis describes the way Fleming describes the voice of M, to be: angry (three times); brutal, cold (seven times); dry, dry (five times); rough (seven times); firmly, testi (five times).
During the twelve novels and two short story collections, Fleming gave a number of details relating to the background and character of M. In On Your Majesty's Secret Service it was revealed that M's payment as head of the Secret Service was Ã,  £ 6,500 a year, (Ã,  £ 124,910 in  £ 2018) Ã,  £ 1,500 coming from a navy retiree. Despite the good pay for the 1950s and 1960s, it was never explained how M accepted or could afford his membership at Blades, a high-end private club for the man he frequented in London to gamble and have dinner. Blades have a limited membership of only 200 men and all should be able to show Ã,  £ 100,000 (£ 1,921,689 in  £ 2018) in cash or gold-eyed securities. Kingsley Amis noted in his study, The James Bond Dossier , that with a salary M, his membership at the club would be confusing. As a personal assistance to M, the staff at Blades kept a supply of cheap red wine from Algeria in hand but did not include it in the wine list. M calls it an "Infuriator" and tends to drink it in moderation unless he is in a very bad mood.
Academician Paul Stock believes that M's office is a metonym for England and a stable point from which Bond departs on a mission, while he sees M as the iconic representative of England and Britain.
In the first post-Fleming book, Colonel Sun , M was kidnapped from Quarterdeck, his home, and Bond tried hard to save him. Subsequent books, written by John Gardner, defend Sir Miles Messervy as M, who protects Bond from a less aggressive new climate in the Secret Service, saying that at some point Britain would need a "blunt instrument". In Gardner's last novel, COLD , M was kidnapped and rescued by Bond and completed the book by retiring from MI6. Author of Sustainable Bond Raymond Benson novel 1998 The Facts of Death continues Messervy retiring, where he still lives in Quarterdeck. The book also introduces the new M, Barbara Mawdsley.

Bernard Lee: 1962-1979
M is played by Bernard Lee of the first Bond film, Dr. Nothing , until Moonraker (1979). At Dr. No, M refers to his notes reducing the number of victims of operations since taking a job, implying someone else holds a job recently before him. The film also sees M calling itself the head of MI7; Lee originally told MI6, but overdubbed it with the name MI7 before the movie's release. Earlier in the film, the department had been referred to as MI6 by radio operators.
A number of Bond scholars have noted that Lee's interpretation of the character is in line with the original literary representation; Cork and Stutz observed that Lee was "very close to the Fleming version character", while Rubin commented on a serious, efficient, and no-nonsense authority figure. Smith and Lavington, meanwhile, say that Lee is "an incarnation of the harsh young admiral Fleming."
Lee died of cancer in January 1981, four months in filming For Your Eyes Only and before one of the scenes can be filmed. Out of respect, no new actor was hired to take on the role and, on the other hand, the manuscript was rewritten so that the character was said to be on leave, with lines given to Chief of Staff Bill Tanner or Defense Secretary Sir Frederick Gray. Then the films refer to Lee's tenure as chief of service, with his self-portrait as M at Scotland's MI6 headquarters during 1999 installment World Not Enough .

Robert Brown: 1983-1989
After the death of Lee in 1981, the producer hired actor Robert Brown to play M at Octopussy . Brown had previously played Admiral Hargreaves, Flag Officer Submarines, in the 1977 film, The Spy Who Loved Me . Undergraduate bonds Steven Jay Rubin, John Cork, and Collin Stutz all consider Admiral Hargreaves to be appointed for the role of M, instead of Brown playing different characters as M.
Pfeiffer and Worrall assume that while Brown looks perfect, his role has been softened from Lee; they also consider it "too obvious", even in the License to Kill they say that it is considered very effective because it revokes the Bond-0 Bond license. Advanced writer Raymond Benson agrees, noting that M's role "is once again borne, and Brown is not allowed the opportunity to explore and express his character"; Benson also thinks the character is "too good".

Judi Dench: 1995-2012
After a long period between the License to Kill and GoldenEye , the producer brought Dame Judi Dench to take over as the new M replaces Robert Brown. This character was based on Stella Rimington, the real head of MI5 between 1992 and 1996. For GoldenEye , M Dench was cold, blunt and initially disliked Bond, which he called "sexist, misogynist dinosaurs, Cold. "Tanner, Chief of Staff, referred to her during the film as" Queen of the Number of Evil ", considering her reputation at that stage as it relied on statistics and analysis rather than impulses and initiatives.
Following Pierce Brosnan's move from his role, Dench continues playing M for the 2006 movie Casino Royale, which reboots the series with Daniel Craig playing Bond. In this new continuity, M has been working for MI6 for some time, at one point muttering, "Christ, I miss the Cold War". According to Skyfall , M was previously responsible for MI6 operations in Hong Kong during the 1990s. His ability to run MI6 has been questioned several times; at Casino Royale, he was the subject of a review when Bond was caught shooting unarmed prisoners and blowing up a foreign embassy in front of the camera; in Quantum of Solace, the Secretary of State ordered him to personally withdraw Bond from the field in Bolivia and stop any investigation of Dominic Greene's eco-terrorist organization; and at Skyfall , he was the subject of a public inquiry when MI6 lost a computer hard drive containing the identity of secret agents around the world. Skyfall marks the seventh and final appearance of Dench as M, where he is targeted by former MI6 agent Raoul Silva, whom he submits to China to rescue six other agents. He was shot and killed in the film, making him the only M who died in the movie Eon Bond. Dench's M made a cameo appearance on Specter in the video will, giving Bond the last command to hunt and end someone, who eventually took him to the movie titular criminal organization.
There is also a brief reference to the M family: in GoldenEye he answers Tanner calling him "The Evil Queen of Numbers" by telling him that when he wants to hear sarcasm he will listen to his children. Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster argues that Dench casting gives the character of maternal touch in relation to Bond, an overtly made tone in Skyfall , where Silva repeatedly refers to it as " Mother "and" Mommy ". In Skyfall he is revealed to be a widow.

Ralph Fiennes: 2012-sekarang
After the death of Judi Dench M at the end of Skyfall , he was replaced by Gareth Mallory, played by Ralph Fiennes. Mallory has been Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee before heading to MI6, and former colonel lieutenant span in the British Army. He served in Northern Ireland with the "Hereford Regiment" (assumed by many commentators to mean Special Air Service) during the Issue, where he was held hostage by the Republic of Ireland Army for three months. In the Specter , Section 00 MI6 is briefly dismantled next to Mallory being unloaded. He helped Bond in the field when it was revealed that the Nine Eyes initiative was part of the Spectre plan to rule the world.

John Huston/David Niven: 1967
The 1967 Satria Casino Royale features not one but two Ms. The first was played by John Huston, who was also directed together. In the film, M's real name is McTarry and he was accidentally killed when, to expel Bond from his retirement, he ordered the military to fire mortars into Bond's house when retired spies refused to return to duty. The first quarter of the film features the next Bond visit to McTarry Castle in Scotland, on a quest to restore the only part of M's remnants found after the attack - his bright red face. Furthermore, Bond - played by David Niven - becomes the new M and proceeds to order that all MI6 agents, male and female, are named "James Bond 007" to confuse enemies.
Edward Fox: 1983
In 1983's Never Say Never Again, Edward Fox played M as a bureaucrat, insulting Bond - away from the relationship shared between Bernard Lee M and Sean Connery's Bond; Academician Jeremy Black noted that the perceived humiliation for part 00 by Fox's M was reciprocated by Connery's Bond. M Fox is also younger than the previous incarnation. Media historian James Chapman notes that while M considers Bond an outdated relic, the Secretary of State orders section 00 to be reactivated.
Comics
M appeared in every James Bond comic book released from 1962 to 1995. With the series re-launch in 2015 by Dynamite Entertainment, M once again became Bond's boss. In an important departure from both the original novel and the film, M is black, not white, and his identity is revealed none other than Miles Messervy when he is named by his first name in Hammerhead. M is scheduled to have his own one-shot comic book in which his backstory is explored when confronted with his back-haunting past, delivered by creators Declan Shalvey and P.J. Holden.
Outside the James Bond series
Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series of comics determined that the 1898-era League (led by Mina Harker) directed by Campion Bond (James Bond's grandfather), who served under the masters called M. M was later revealed none other than James Moriarty in disguise, using the League to win the gang war against Fu Manchu. After the death of Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes's brother, Mycroft Holmes, took over the role of M. In the sequel volume of The Black Dossier, which was set during the postwar British 1950s, the British chief of the secret service , M, is Harry Lime, from Graham Greene The Third Man . In the final volume of Century , from 1910 to 2009, M of 2009 is the old Emma Peel of The Avengers . In the 2003 film adaptation of the series, M is once again Moriarty, and is played by Richard Roxburgh.
