Realdania is a private association in Denmark that supports philanthropic projects in architecture and planning. Realdania is often mistakenly referred to as a private charitable foundation, but the legal structure of Realdania is an organization that operates as a business rather than a foundation. Only real estate owners in Denmark can become members of Realdania and participate in the election of councilors. Realdania has several subsidiaries.

Structure

The closed structure of Realdania has provoked criticism, and the association funds have been called "billions of stray" because they are controlled by a small network of people.

Its activities are concentrated on supporting projects in architectural and built environments and are focused on three areas: cities, buildings and architectural heritage. The Statute of Realdania states that the purpose of the association is to:

1. Support nonprofit and charity goals, especially in the built environment, and especially in Denmark,
2. Run an investment company,
3. Earn shares in companies involved in activities related to the built environment,
4. Provide services related to the built environment, and
5. Obtain and build real property to preserve the heritage built and develop Danish development practices

Realdania was founded in 2000 after the sale of Realkredit Danmark to Danske Bank, when funds of about 20 billion kroner (EUR 2.7 billion) were set aside for philanthropic purposes. Danmark's realkredit is owned and controlled by its members (mortgage lender), and this structure is kept in Realdania.

By the end of 2011, Realdania's donation fund reached 2.1 billion euros.

Projects supported by Realdania include the Danish Architecture Center in Copenhagen, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum at Aarhus and Brewery in Copenhagen, ordered from Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
