The United States Foreign War Veteran ( VFW , or just Veterans of Foreign War ) is an American war veteran organization headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. VFW was founded by James C. Putnam on September 29, 1899. The membership of the organization consists of veterans who, as soldiers, sailors, marines, coast guards, or aviators, serve the US in wars, campaigns and expeditions on foreign soil or unfriendly water.

History

The United States Veterans War veteran was produced from the merger of several societies that formed immediately after the Spanish-American War in 1899, small groups of veterans who returned from campaigning in Cuba and the Philippine Islands, established local communities for the spirit of friendship, known only to them who have faced the danger of war side by side. Similar experiences and common language get them together. The American Veteran of the Foreign Service (predecessor to the United States Veterans of the United States) was founded in Columbus, Ohio, September 29, 1899, by Spanish-American War veteran James C. Putnam. The Colorado Society, the Philippine Army, was held in Denver, Colorado, December 12, 1899. Shortly thereafter, a society known as the Veterans of the Foreign Service was born in Pennsylvania. These organizations grew side by side, increasing their coverage and membership until 1913, when at a convention held in Denver, they merged their interests and identities within a national organization now known as the Veterans of the United States Overseas War.

Big Seal

The Maltese Cross is the official emblem of VFW. The cross, radiating rays, and Great Seal of the United States together symbolize the characters, oaths, and goals that distinguish VFW as command of the fighters who have traveled away from home to defend the sacred principles. The eight points represent the sayings prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, the pure, the merciful, the peacemaker; Blessed are those who mourn, seek the truth and be persecuted for the truth. The eight-pointed Cross of Malta returned to the Crusades, launched in the 12th century.
